Mulheres no Mercado #5: Especiarias
In this painting, the central figure - a Goan woman - appears selling spices against a backdrop marked by colour, a suggested aroma and texture. More than an everyday scene, the work pays homage to one of the richest legacies of the meeting of cultures in Goa: the spice trade. Turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and cardamom, represented in vivid mounds and intense pigments, are symbols of history, resistance and identity. Each spice, meticulously painted, evokes not only the senses, but also the ways of the world, the crossroads between East and West, and the decisive role of women in preserving and passing on this sensory and cultural heritage. The figure, serene and secure, is also the guardian of this memory.
